Type: Sunhangia elegans (DC.) H. Ohashi & K. Ohashi (Desmodium elegans DC.). Earlier in Desmodium. The generic name honours professor Sun Hang, Director of Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences Kunming, China. The genus consists of about 6 species from Afghanistan to Myanmar and South China; 2 species and 1 variety in India.
