Type: Vigna glabra Savi, nom. illeg. (Dolichos luteolus Jacq.), Vigna luteola (Jacq.) Benth. The genus is named after Domenico Vigni (?1577–1647), Professor of Botany at Pisa and ninth curator of the Pisa Botanic Garden (the oldest in Europe) which was founded in 1543. About 105 species in paleo tropics and subtropics, predominantly in Africa, also in Neotropics; 26 species and 6 varieties in India.
